about geoffrey

Geoffrey Hicks is a visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker focusing on projects that are technically challenging while equally creative and stimulating. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Hicks’ interest in the arts began with classes in black and white photography at Booker T. Washington High School and continued at the University of Oklahoma and California Institute of the Arts before returning to pursue his art back in the Midwest.
His work ranges from traditional photography to art installations and video art and filmmaking. Focusing on technology driven interactive artwork, several of his early installations featured custom built digital picture frames that utilized integrated proximity sensors allowing the artwork to detect and change based on the viewer's position. Hicks’ more recent installations have grown larger in scale and complexity. For his installation, The Photographer, part of Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition’s ART365 Exhibition, he hacked a defunct 800-pound industrial robotic arm into a fully autonomous photographer able to seek out and take portraits of individuals in its vicinity.
Much of Mr. Hicks’ recent interest involves collaborations with contemporary and classically trained ballet dancers. This collaboration began with his installation, Heartbeat, and continued with Augmentation II and Dichotomy. He is currently undertaking several new dance projects slated for completion later this year.
