Heartbeat

Interactive Light Sculpture

Commissioned by: MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation
Location: Santa Barbara, California
Year: 2019

Heartbeat is an interactive light sculpture composed of 151 individually suspended incandescent light bulbs that pulse in response to the heartbeat of participants interacting with the installation below. Hanging overhead as a floating field of light, the sculpture transforms biological rhythms into a shared visual environment of motion and illumination.

Visitors interact directly with the work using a hand-grip heart rate sensor positioned beneath the sculpture. As participants hold the sensor, waves of light travel through the suspended bulbs at the rhythm of their heartbeat, causing the installation to continuously shift in speed, intensity, and movement based on the physiology of the individual engaging with it.

Originally developed in 2010 for Momentum, a curated exhibition presented by the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, this version of the installation was commissioned by MOXI in Santa Barbara, California for public presentation within the museum environment. The work explores the translation of invisible biological systems into large-scale physical experiences through light, participation, and real-time interaction.
